Eikan-dō Temple

Famed for an Amida Buddha statue that looks back over his shoulder, Eikan-dō feels like walking through a living painting—mossy paths, ponds and traditional buildings. Come for the autumn maple illumination (opens around 5:30pm) and aim to visit a few hours before closing to avoid queues; you’ll remove shoes in parts of the temple.
